MAC Matte Cream: Review & Photos

A matte-ifying cream that acts like a powder, M·A·C Matte adds a sheer, no-shine matte texture in one smooth layer. May be used on bare or made-up skin. Use a latex sponge or a 252 Large Shader Brush to apply over the entire face or in the T-zone to reduce the appearance of shine. Apply M·A·C Matte after moisturizer, but before foundation to prime the skin for makeup. Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation applies smoothly and effortlessly over top of M·A·C Matte.

Where to Buy: Maccosmetics.com, $19.00

MAC Matte Cream ($19.00 for 0.75 0z)  is actually a gel formula primer that is supposed to act as a barrier between your face and make that will help minimize the breakthrough of oil throughout the day.

While using this primer, I didn't notice much of a difference in terms of it helping my makeup stay on during the day. I still had to blot my face every 2-3 hours, which is normal for my regular foundation/powder. I have extremely oily skin, so I was looking for this to be a miracle product that would at least help me get to the 4 hour mark without having to touch up my face, but sadly this just didn't do it for me!

However, the Matte Cream did help my foundation really glide on my skin. This primer fills in your pores making them almost invisible, so applying products on top of this is effortless. You only need the tiniest bit of product to cover your entire face, so this will last you quite a while even with everyday use! The Matte Cream is also very good at soaking in quickly, it won't sit on your skin as some other primers do.

MAC claims that you can also use this on top of your makeup, but when I had given that a try it did nothing but smear my foundation/powder making a giant cake-y mess! I wouldn't advice trying to use it this way, its a general rule of thumb that you don't apply liquid products over powder, and most people with oily skin top their foundation with a powder so I'm not sure their logic on that!

The packaging is really convenient, I wish all primers came in a squeeze tube! It gives you total control over how much product comes out, minimizing waste, and you'll be able to get every last drop out.

After wearing this for about a week and a half, I started to notice I was getting a lot of little whiteheads on my forehead! I've used a lot of MAC face products in the past and I don't usually have a problem with them making me breakout, so this was quite a shock for me. I stopped using it, and within 3 days my skin was infinitely better.

Overall, this product just didn't wow me in any way. It really didn't perform at all in the oil control department and although it did create a nice smooth base for the rest of my face makeup, I'm not about to shell out $19.00 for something that pretty much any other primer will do! On top of the fact that it doesn't live up to its claims, the MAC Matte Cream completely made my face break out even when I don't have sensitive skin. If you're looking for a primer, completely skip over this one, its a dud!

  1. What a shame, I was going to try this next! It seems to have extremes of people loving and hating it.. but you're right, the tube is so handy, I have a pump primer from Sephora that has so much left that I can't reach!

    1. I'd skip it if your skin is like mine (oily, acne). I've heard a lot about the Black Radiance Primer if you can find that in your area, ore even order online!
