February Favorites

February was a pretty minimal month in terms of makeup, I was really focusing more on my skin and venturing into contouring/highlighting!

Ahh, my trusty foundation that I've been using since September! I actually ran out of this in early January and tried using Almay Truly Lasting Color Liquid Makeup in Buff, which was the absolute perfect color match for me, but its such crap. It claims to last 16 hours, but no, it slid off my face in 2. So I hurried my butt back to the drugstore and grabbed what I initially should've gotten in the first place! You know when you use something for a really long time and you just itch to try something else? I think that's what happened with my Revlon ColorStay, but it really made me appreciate how good this actually is. The coverage is great (very buildable without being cake-y) and most importantly is really lasts on my super oily skin, I only need to blot once or twice throughout the day. The only downsides are the color selection (they really need more yellow shades!) and the fact that THERE IS NO FREAKIN' PUMP! Like come on, I don't even mind paying more for the foundation just GIVE ME A PUMP REVLON!

My beloved MAC Blot Powder in Medium has recently died (sad blog post on that soon!) so I needed something to replace it and picked out an old favorite. I used to think this powder was the bee's knees until I tried the MAC one, now its just hard to use anything else but I'm not quite ready to shell out another $23 for it. Compared to eachother, this isn't as good but gets the job done. The Maybelline Dream Matte is much more cake-y so I have to be careful when putting it on, but it does keep the oil at bay for a good 2 or 3 hours. Not too sure why Maybelline decided to put shimmers in this powder, they don't transfer on your face, but still, I would prefer my face makeup to be completely shimmer free unless I'm deliberately highlighting! all in all, this is a great drugstore alternative to the more expensive oil controlling powders.

theBalm Bahama Mama Bronzer

Now if you know me, I'm not a bronzer person at all. But recently I've been wanting to venture into the world of contouring so I ventured to find the perfect matte bronzer. Initially I didn't like theBalm Bahama Mama because I thought it came across quite muddy in swatches, but when its on your face its a different story! It really works well with my skin tone to just create that "shadowed" look under my cheekbones so I look like I actually have them. It is quite pigmented though, so I have to fight that urge to just swirl my brush in it!

I love when the weather starts getting warmer because that's when I like my skin to look nice and glowy! I'm usually not one for highlighting just because I have acne and my skin gets a lot of shine throughout the day so its just best not to bring attention to that, but I make an exception in the spring and summer. I've tried other liquid type highlighters and they just really don't work for me because I find them harder to control (I end up getting shimmer everywhere...) so having a powder is just so much easier! This one isn't so much glittery, it just gives a really nice sheen to your skin without being like oh did you cruise the glitter section of a craft store? Plus, this compact looks stunning sitting on my vanity ;)

Revlon ColorStay Foundation for Oily/Combination Skin

Want makeup that is flawless and weightless for 16 perfect hours? Revlon has the solution - ColorStay™ Makeup with SoftFlex™.

Specially formulated for combination or oily skin, this oil-free formula helps control shine all day and gives you flawless looking skin.

Makeup looks fresh and feels great for up to 16 hours thanks to the lightweight, comfortable feel from the SoftFlex ColorStay™ formula.

Medium to full coverage, with SPF 6 protection*.

*Golden, Caramel, Toast, Rich Ginger, Cappuccino, Mahogany, and Mocha do not contain SPF

Pros:

-Sleek and classy glass packaging
-Thick formula covers redness, blemishes, and mild discoloration
-A little bit of the foundation can go a long way and can be thinned out with moisturizer for those who prefer lighter coverage
-Doesn't settle in the creases of your face throughout the day
-The finish is very natural, not completely matte
-Works fairly well to control oil throughout the day, I still need to blot every two hours but that's much less frequent than other foundations I've tried
-Hasn't caused any breakouts
-Is fairly transfer resistant
-The SPF of 6 isn't high enough to interfere with flash photography
-Doubles really well as a concealer if you dab on your problem areas
-Doesn't oxidize throughout the day

Cons:

-The price of this foundation ranges from about $10-$14, which is quite pricey for the drugstore (but I can deal since they frequently do 40% off Revlon)
-REALLY difficult to clean off your brushes, I usually have to spot clean with my MAC brush cleanser and then take my brush to the sink and wash with baby shampoo a few times to actually see the white on the bristles again!
-Its pretty much a guessing game when you go to pick this foundation out at the drugstore since they don't do testers (not to mention there's only 20 shades so if you're super fair or super dark you might be out of luck); I had to return the first shade I picked out and grab another which I still don't think matches me correctly (lesson: grab from a store with a good return policy)!
-For some reason a lot of the darker shades don't contain SPF (those shades are listed above)
-Dries on your face really quickly, you need to do some speedy blending!
-The smell is pretty strong, you're going to notice it once its on your face (but don't worry it fades in about 10 minutes)
-If you're not one to set your foundation with powder be advised that the Revlon Colorstay will feel very sticky
-A big downfall that usually happens with most drugstore foundations is the lack of a pump, I usually either get too much or not enough, and let me just tell you that when you get halfway through the bottle tipping it over and over again because you didn't get enough is the most annoying process
-Because of the lack of a pump, the screw on lid gets massively messy with dripping foundation
-If you use the back of your hand to put your foundation on before applying and let it dry, its pretty much going to stay there all day unless you use a makeup remover wipe
-The SPF of 6 is better than nothing but not high enough to protect you skin on an everyday basis alone
-The coverage is good, but needs a few layers to cover bad discoloration
-It takes some trial and error to find a brush that will apply this in a way that works for you, I find my Sigma F80 does the best job since its so dense which prevents it from absorbing too much product, but I also like using my fingers (aside from the fact that this foundation is a nightmare to get off once it dries)
- This foundation will stain like no other! I keep a white towel on my vanity for spot cleaning, wiping my hands and such, and it's just covered with foundation spots from the Revlon ColorStay, so make sure you don't get it on anything that's going to upset you if it doesn't come out
-Can look extremely cakey if you use a setting powder that's too heavy (like MAC's Studio Fix Powder), I like to set this with MAC's Pressed Blot Powder
-You need to have a good makeup remover when using the Revlon ColorStay Foundation, when I first starting using this I thought just cleansing my face was enough to get it all off, but nope, it clogged my pores like no other, so invest in some good makeup removing wipes

Overall:

Usually I stay away from liquid foundations because I just know they're going to slide off my oily skin during the day, but I'm very pleased with the Revlon ColorStay foundation for Oily/Combination Skin! I find myself not having to blot as frequently, not having to use as much concealer, and I'm much more comfortable with my skin because this foundation has fantastic coverage. I'm pretty in love with the Revlon ColorStay Foundation for Oily/Combination Skin, so it's going to be a long, long while before I venture out and try another liquid foundation! If your skin is similar to mine (very oily/lots of discoloration/acne) I strongly suggest that you try this out!

September Favorites!

 Stila Smudge Pot in "Kitten"

For some reason I've been REALLY into cream shadows this month (it must be the MAC Posh Paradise collection with the 8 new Paint Pots, I need to get me some of those)! "Kitten" is a super neutral champagne color that is quite shimmery so it completely brightens up the eye area. I've been sweeping this across my lid pretty much every day  in September (or some days using it as a base for the Wet n Wild trio colors since their lasting power isn't strong) with the brown shade in the Wet n Wild "Walking On Eggshells" Trio in the crease. I never get any creasing with this Stila Smudge Pot when I put my Too Faced Shadow Insurance underneath, so its a complete winner in my books!

e.l.f. Studio Blush in "Peachy Keen"

I've been in quite the blush-rut this month, nothing has been striking me fancy lately (which is such a shocker since my blush collection is massive...) so I've been sticking to some lighter, shimmery colors. "Peachy Keen" barely shows up on my skin, but it does give the most gorgeous glow that looks like almost nothing is there! The staying power is not so great, but I will definitely compromise on that for the lovely sheen I get from this color!

Revlon ColorStay Foundation for Combination/Oily Skin in "180 Sand Beige"

This is the first liquid foundation I've tried in a long, long time since I'm usually too afraid I'll get oily throughout the day, but this is a new holy grail item! I'm absolutely in love with how much coverage you can get from this Revlon ColorStay foundation, it covers everything you can imagine but can also be sheered out for those days you don't need full-coverage. As long as I set this with a powder I'm good to go for about 2 hours without the need to blot (that is massively long for me)! This will surely be a favorite for months to come.

Wet n Wild Color Icon Trio in "Walking on Eggshells"

My absolute favorite shade from this trio is the brown, its a dream to blend and is so incredibly pigmented! I've been throwing it in my crease this entire month, while also sometimes using the shimmery white and pink-champagne color on occasions when I want to mix it up. As long as I use a base and primer with these shadows I'm good to go all day. For only $2.99 you really can't go wrong!

TOCCA Eau de Parfum "Stella"

I got this as a sample with an order I made online and it has completely replaced all my Bath & Body Works goodies! Its definitely more of a "mature" smell, nothing fruity, more floral-y and musk-y. I would love to purchase the full-size of this perfume, but everywhere I look its super expensive. If you know of anywhere I can get it for a decent price, let me know!

Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm Tin

Just like my recent cream eyeshadow kick, I've been loving lip tins! The Burt's Bees one is great because it has peppermint oil in it which gives your lips that tingly effect that I love! And of course, just like every other Burt's Bees lip product, its incredibly moisturizing which is what I need now that the weather is starting to get colder!

August Favorites

I'm sorry, I could've sworn yesterday it was only June?!

Like every month, this one went by exceptionally fast! August is never fun in my opinion, only because it means I have to start thinking about getting back into school.

I actually start my senior year tomorrow, and I wish I was more excited! I kind of want it to be May already so I can just graduate and be done, I'm really over highschool. My junior year was the MOST stressful one yet, I swear there was barely time for me to breathe so I kind of feel like I didn't get much of a break between that stress and the new stress of SAT's, applying to college, paying for college...blergh.

But anywho, here are the products I've been loving throughout August! I'm not going to do my usual description for each product about why I've been loving it just because I have a million and one things to do before tomorrow!

Bath & Body Works Strawberry Lemonade Moisture-Rich Body Lotion

China Glaze "For Audrey"

MAC Paint Pot in "Indianwood"

Maybelline Dream Matte Powder in "Medium Sand"

Cargo OneBase Concealer + Foundation in "01"

L'oreal HIP Jelly Balm in "Plush"

Walgreens & Rite Aid Haul

So I spent my Saturday doing a little drugstore shopping while the rest of Massachusetts was preparing for hurricane Irene!

I was honestly more worried about the large spider that decided to make its new home in the lamp above my bed (and the general increase of those vile creatures in my room...) than the hurricane. I've been through my fare share of terrible weather in the past so not much phases me anymore! Other than a mass amount of flooding, nothing much happened in my area, but I hope everyone else made it through safe and sound!

Anyways, I took advantage of Walgreens' 40% off Revlon sale and Rite Aid's 40% off Wet N Wild sale.

Walgreens:

Revlon ColorStay Combination/Oily Skin in 220 Natural Beige
Price: $8.09

I've come to the conclusion that I desperately need more coverage than a powder foundation gives, but something that still has oil control properties. I've heard nothing but fab things about Revlon foundations in general, so the 40% off sale was just extra incentive to try it out! I will say though the shade selection was a little weak, a lot of the colors had yellow undertones, but 220 Natural Beige seems like it will be a good match for my N5-NW20 skin.

Clean & Clear Boost Mango & Papaya Morning Burst Body Wash
Price: $.99

This was one of those things that caught my eye as I was checking out with its lovely neon orange packaging (damn those strategically placed items...). I already have the little sample size of the blue Splash body wash (not my fave, review of that coming up) so I thought I'd give this one a chance since I'll be needing a little body wash when I go to visit my dad for 10 days in a couple of weeks. I'm very pleased with my impulse purchase since this smells absolutely divine!

Rite Aid:

Wet n Wild Mega Last Lip Color in Think Pink
Price: $1.79

I've been trying to get into more pink makeup instead of sticking to my trusty corals, so I thought I'd give this lipstick a try while it was on sale! I have since tried it out and think its total rubbish! The damn cap was pretty much screwed on, so that was a battle in itself, but then I tried to twist the lipstick bullet up and it wouldn't budge...completely fail in the packaging department Wet n Wild. When I did manage to get the color on my lips it looked rank, totally splotchy and cakey.

Wet n Wild Color Icon Blusher in Pearlescent Pink
Price: $1.79

I have the other 3 Wet n Wild Color Icon Blushers and adore them, so it only made since to pick up the only one I don't have! I think this is going to make a great summer to fall transition color since it does have some brown in it but still a nice amount of shimmer.

Wet N Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Trio in Walking on Eggshells
Price: $1.79

Everyone and their mother raves about the Wet N Wild eyeshadow trios, so I thought it was about time I jumped on the bandwagon! I bought all of the neutral trios since I knew I just wouldn't use any of the ones with the brighter shades. I have yet to open any of these, but the colors looking stunning!

Wet N Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Trio in I'm Getting Sunburned
Price: $1.79

Just look at that absolutely gorgeous gold shade! That color alone justifies picking up this palette, and apparently I'm not the only one who thinks so because this was the last trio on the shelf. I'm a little bummed to just be getting this now towards the end of the summer, it would have been nice to rock a golden lid in June/July, but whatever, it'll transition to fall and this make a great shade for Christmas party eyes!

Wet N Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Trio in Silent Treatment
Price: $1.79

The last neutral Wet n Wild trio, I'm excited to experiment with this one because I've never worn taupe colored shadows, I'm curious to see how they'll look with my brown eyes! I don't really understand why Wet n Wild likes to include that pink "brow bone" shade with a lot of their trios? Pink shadows don't really appeal to me, I kinda wish they would just put the classic white!

Grocery Store Score!

My mom and I were at our local grocery store the other day trying to get the weeks meals sorted out, and it was taking a super long time, so I really needed to use the bathroom, which low and behold happens to be right next to the clearance rack :).

Nothing is really ever on that rack except old dented soups and ripped cereal boxes, plus there's usually a bunch of elderly people hogging it up so I never really give it much attention.

But this time, the coast was clear with not a grey haired person in sight, and there was this lonely little Maybelline Fit Me foundation sitting on the rack with a little sticker screaming
"HI, I'M ONLY $3.75, TAKE ME HOME WITH YOU!".

Psha, I had to give it a home right?

I took it into the bathroom to take a look in the mirror, and whaddya know, it was my shade :).

I wasn't ever really planning on getting this foundation because I've heard a lot of reviews saying that it makes your face oily, and I have the world's most oily skin, so not a match made in heaven. But I think I'm going to form my own $3.75 opinion :).

I had gotten samples of the Maybelline Fit me foundation line a while back from Wal-Mart in the mail that came with a lovely little $1 off any Fit me product but I have yet to get around to testin' it out.

I'm liking the classy drugstore foundation look, I hope all the other brands catch on too!

I probably won't start experimenting with this until summer, so I'll make sure to do a long review on it for you guys.

MAC And Sephora Haul

MAC:
Studio Finish Concealer SPF 35 in NW20
I asked the woman at the MAC counter to recommend a concealer that would be really thick and do a good job at covering up blemishes/my discoloration. She told me about the Studio Finish Concealer SPF 35, tried out a few colors, and told me NW20 would suite my skin the best. I wasn't expecting anything spectacular since the makeup artists never put on enough product when trying things on in the store because they don't want to risk it looking cake-y, but I was amazed to see that all of the little blemishes and discoloration were completely GONE! I've always struggled with finding concealers that will cover up the unsightly dark blue marks on my face from picking at my acne (such a bad habit!) because most makeup artists have told me there's no way to completely cover it up. But I find that if I put a few layers of the Studio Finish Concealer SPF 35 on, it's like liquid skin; this is my first ever holy grail makeup item!

Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation in N5

My mom actually bought this foundation a while ago, and her skin has looked so good ever since! So when I went to MAC, I knew this foundation was a perfect fit for me, especially since I have oily skin and powder is pretty much the only thing I can wear! So I asked the makeup artist (who was such a sweetheart by the way, none of that you-look-young-so-I'm-going-to-be-snotty crap!) to match me to a color, and she said I could either wear NW25 or N5. I was surprised because I thought I would have been NW20 like my concealer? But I guess not! My mom's color is actually NW25, so I opted against that because I think she's way darker than me (plus it would probably come across orange-y on my skin!). I should've asked the makeup artist to
try out N5 on my skin before I bought it, but luckily it's my absolute perfect match, so she has a good eye! So far, I'm absolutely loving this powder!

  Lipstick in Creme d'Nude

I knew when I went to MAC that I really wanted to get a nude lipstick, but I just wasn't sure which one would work for me! The makeup artist tried out a bunch and we both came to the conclusion that Creme d'Nude looks the best since it has peach undertones so I wouldn't get the "concealer lips" look (which I honestly want to try just putting concealer on my lips for a look!). I had previously looked at this color online, and it didn't really appeal to me since you can tell from the picture above, it looks too pink and dark to actually be a nude (lesson learned that you really need to look at things up close and personal!). This color has become one of my go-to lip products for the Spring and I'm so glad I picked it up!

Sephora:
Two Faced Shadow Insurance

Two Faced Shadow Insurance has been on my list for such a long time! I kept debating between this and the Urban Decay Primer Potion, but the whole "depotting" aspect to the Primer Potion really put me off, so I decided on Shadow Insurance! At first I really didn't think it kept my shadows on any longer than they would without a primer, but I found that I need more than just a little speck due to my oily skin! Now I really love this eye primer, and I'm glad I picked this over Urban Decay!

Be on the lookout for reviews on all these products!

Cargo OneBase Concealer + Foundation

I went to Sephora about a year ago and asked them for a good concealer to hide the dark spots on my face, and the woman recommended this. I actually don't think they carry Cargo products anymore? So that might make purchasing this again a little difficult, but If you're looking for a concealer with heavy coverage, I'd invest some time in trying to find this.

Pros: It covers the dark spots on my face pretty well with in a couple of coats, and I never need to reapply, this concealer lasts all day. I've recently started using this as an eyeshadow primer, and it actually seems to work pretty well. The tube is huge and you get a ton of product so it will last such a long time; I've had mine for over a year and there's more than half the tube left.

Cons: The product is really liquidy, so I like to put my powder on first and then put this on so it has something to stick to. With the little doe foot applicator I don't know how you could actually use this as a foundation? So Cargo should re-think their packaging, plus this silver tube is pretty ugly compared to other concealers. I also feel that the applicator spreads bacteria on my face when I use it to cover up acne, so they really should just have it be a squeeze out tube.

This Cargo concealer is pretty pricey at $26, but if you're looking for something with multi purposes, this product is worth it.

Maybelline Dream Matte Powder

A pressed powder innovation, Dream matte Powder's ultra-fine formula delivers an amazing air-soft feel and silky texture.
- Jet-milled into ultra-fine particles for an air-soft, ultra-silky texture
- Revolutionary liquid binder ingredients provide cushiony smooth application
- Formula ensures superior blendability for even application every time
- Magically matches skin's texture, never dusts up or settles into lines

For Best Results

Apply Dream Matte Powder onto your forehead, nose, cheeks and chin with the provided puff using gentle downward strokes. Build coverage gradually.

Pros: After I wash and moisturize my face it always looks shiny, and this powder makes it all completely matte, plus no matter how much I put on it doesn't seem to get cakey. The little swivel mirror is really handy for checking my face at school in case I need a touch up. I bought the color medium sand, and when I hold the compact up to my face it doesn't seem to match, but it does blend really well into my skin. This powder also sets my concealer really well, and it doesn't budge all day.

Cons: There are tiny, tiny sparkles in the product, which is so irritating because it's supposed to be MATTE, and I don't know why you would want to have glittery foundation anyway? But they don't show up on my skin, so I guess it's not too much of a problem. The swivel mirror is nice, but the little puff that comes with it is completely useless, it makes the powder look cakey (but it is really soft).

I've hit tin on this product, and I'll probably be getting another one as it's the best matte powder I've ever used, so I'd recommend trying it out.

I had such high hopes for this foundation since I've heard so many positive reviews about it. I went to Wal-Mart to pick out my perfect shade, and spent 20 minutes doing so with my mom so I'd have a second opinion. We found my color, W3 Nude Beige. I used it before school the next day, only to be mortified when everyone kept telling me my face looked orange.

Pros: This foundation is super blendable and works well over concealer.

Cons: I know I have an exact match shade, but this foundation looks different in my schools fluorescent lights than my lights at home. I look like I belong on The Jersey Shore, because for some reason this color makes my skin really orange-y! From looking at the bottle, I can also see that the foundation itself has little specks of glitter in it, which is irritating, I want my foundation to be completely matte!

So I wouldn't recommend this product if your match is W3 Nude Beige, but maybe it works better for other skin tones.
